Slick, smooth, a little cold...

Day four of winter break, and I'm four movies - currently suffering through the horror that is Soul Plane - into my journey. It's been a good break so far...

Today's first movie was The Ice Harvest with John Cusack. It's a dark movie and not always a funny one. It's a pretty good modern film noir, something that John Cusack hasn't dropped for us in a long while. He's been a little trapped with the light-hearted romantic comedy, but this is a good return to dark form for Cusack.

We open on Christmas Eve with Cusack and Billy Bob Thorton making off with $2 million from Cusack's boss and the two planning their getaway on Christmas morning. The boss gets wind of things and sends a knee-breaker to check on things. The evening is spent by the two trying to avoid and then take care of the knuckle-scraper.

And then we meet the femme fatale that makes this a true noir. She's a doozy, twisting the two leads around her finger.

In the end, then, the bad end unhappily and the good unluckily. Some folks were pleased with the turnout and others really weren't. I enjoyed the ride.

Here's a part that's been bugging me in regards to the femme fatale character, Renata...the picture she was so desparately worried about...I know, it was to keep Charlie busy while VIC got ready to leave town with her...but I mean...what proof of stoppage of extortion is the actual photograph? I mean...come on...negatives? Scanning? Digital files? In this day and age, merely having a picture means nothing...not to mention the fact that pictures can be doctored pretty well through photoshop and stuff...just look at Joey's TA pass for his brush with greatness with SnoopDog...

I know it was just a wild goose chase to keep Cusack's character busy...one in which he was happy to involve himself due to the fact that he was taken with Renata...but that part just didn't work for me...

otherwise...good flick...especially b/c it only cost a buck and 88 minutes of my time...

No, admittedly, the hunt for the photograph isn't reasonable in today's day and age. I took it more as her semi-cruelness of sending her lapdog (Cusack, who had a huge crush/lust after her) on an errand.

She knew that Vic wasn't going to be blackmailing her any more anyway (it would take a spoiler to say why), so the picture wasn't worth anything to her other than perhaps peace of mind.
